Valderia Botanical Garden

The "Valderia" Alpine Botanical Garden is located in Terme di Valdieri, in the upper Gesso Valley, the heart of the Maritime Alps and owes its name to the Viola valderia, an endemism identified for the first time in 1780 in this area, on the bed of the stream, by the Piedmontese botanist Carlo Allioni. This is a cool place with lush spontaneous vegetation, so paths were buit here in the nineteenth century, creating an "English Garden", where the guests of the nearby spa would come to walk.

Abandoned for many decades, the area was renovated in 1990, on the initiative of Alpi Marittime Nature Park which destined it to host the new botanical garden, where the beautiful violet is not the only pearl present in this paradise of scents and colours.

In fact, it is home to over 500 species of plants from the Maritime Alps which, by virtue of the presence of numerous species with a more or less restricted distribution area, are considered among the areas with the highest plant biodiversity in Europe and the "main concentration of endemic species" in the Alps.

Origin,Environments, and Paths

Cooperativa Montagne del Mare

Currently, within Valderia there are about 500 species of plants gathered in fourteen environments, representative of the main ecosystems of the Maritime Alps, namely limestone and siliceous rocks, riverbed, larch grove, broad leaved plants, meadow, spring, alpine prairie, beech undergrowth, peat bog, shrub, animal pen, stream and mixed fir wood.
This setting, designed to respond to the informative and educational purposes of the garden, not only makes it easy to observe species that could only be seen after hours walking, but also offers a clear and comprehensible picture of the entire "plant world" of the Maritime Alps.
The discovery of each individual flower is thus combined with the pleasure of grasping the links between the different botanical species and their surrounding environment. The desire to make this setting of natural beauty available to as many people as possible led to the creation of "Valderia Agil" in 2021, a wooden walkway that makes the lower section of the garden accessible to all.
