Valdieri Archaeological Area

The archaeological site, taken over by our cooperative in 2021, was discovered in 1993 following road widening of Via della Guardia di Frontiera that brought to light a protohistoric burial ground. This archaeological area was opened to the public from 2008, while in 2013 the area as we see it today was created.

Archaeological Area consists of two main areas of interest, namely the Burial ground and the Museum. The first area has the remains of the wall structures of a burial site in use between the Bronze and Iron Ages and the reproduction of a protohistoric hut, these constitute the archaeological site, while in the museum space not far away you can see the finds, and gain insights and further information.

The general structure can be described as an integrated set of archaeological features, natural elements and accurate environmental reconstructions that aims to preserve and make known our historical and prehistoric heritage to the general public, immersing the visitor in moments of daily life of cultures and lifestyles that have long since disappeared.

Burial ground

Cooperativa Montagne del Mare

The Burial ground is located on the edge of a large and ancient terraced area, located north-east of Valdieri near Via Guardia della Frontiera, it is a small area dedicated to cremation, with an elongated rectangular structure and with dry-stone walls about 90 cm thick made of local material. These findings are accompanied by a series of faithful historical reconstructions consisting of a hut and spaces dedicated to specific activities, created for educational and informative purposes.
The complex also includes 8 wooden huts intended for overnight stays, to immerse yourself in nature and history.

Museum

Cooperativa Montagne del Mare

The museum space is set up in the Museum of the Resistance and the Territory of Valdieri inside Casa Lovera, one of the historic buildings of Valdieri that belonged to an ancient noble family of Valdieri and which overlooks the main square of the village, not far from the burial ground.

Here in an exhibition curated by the Archaeological Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo and entitled "Fragments of history. Living and dying in Valle Gesso 3,000 years ago" you can find further information on the archaeological site, reconstructions and historical finds found both at the burial ground and in other places in the Gesso Valley such as Desertetto, Terme di Valdieri, Roaschia, Entracque and Roccavione.
